I’ve spent a lot of time driving by and through Frederick in my adult life. It’s about halfway between where I grew up and my family still lives in Pennsylvania and where I currently live in Northern Virginia. But it’s only been in the last year or so that I’ve started to dig into the burgeoning beer scene there.
When most people think of Frederick beer, their mind’s immediately go to Flying Dog. Flying Dog is awesome, and there’ll be a future Brew Coup on their brewery, but today I wanted to focus on one of the newer players in the Maryland beer scene: Attaboy Beer. Attaboy is one of my favorite finds and I now make a point to stop whenever heading north (or south) to pick up crowlers and try whatever is new.
Attaboy Beer: The Essentials
- 400 Sagner Ave Ste 400 Frederick, MD 21701 (Near Carroll Creek Park and the Frederick Fairgrounds)
Brews to Choose
I love Attaboy’s descriptions – they are all short and sweet, like “Pear, Banana, White Wine” or “Piney, Citrusy, Punchy”. Get a flight of three while you are there (or two flights of three to try most of what is on draft). Here are a couple of my favorites:
- Creek Life. There always seems to be a version of this extra pale ale on draft, though the hops they use seem to rotate.
- Lima Fresca: this Saison/Farmhouse always ends up in a crowler when I see it on draft.
- Pure or Simple: these two pale ales are just what they promise: clean and refreshing beverages.
In terms of food, there’s often a food truck when I’ve been there on weekends, so you are covered there.
Don’t Forget the Swag
When I first saw their “LOCAL BREWERY” tees I got immediately excited and then a little sad I didn’t think of it first. I asked Attaboy co-owner Carly about them when I bought one back in the spring and she told me “A little piece of me wanted to open a brewery just so we could make those shirts. My husband reminded me that we also need shirts with our name on them.” For the record, their name IS on the back and it’s become my go-to tee when visiting other breweries.
Attaboy is just one of the great breweries that have popped up in Frederick in the last few years. What’s your favorite Frederick beer? Let me know and maybe it’ll show up on Brew Coup soon! Until then…
